It is very important to update all protection application before running a scan. Since viruses and other threats are basically being release everyday you need up-to-date protection to help eliminate any threats that you may have on your system. There is a saying I use "For each infection that you know about on your system you probably have 5 or more that you don't know about". That is why you need to keep up to date and run at least three different virus / malware / spyware programs to be relatively safe. To update AVG all you need to do is to select the Update button on the left and when it is finished select it again until it says all updates are done. You may need to restart you computer to complete a few updates.
